In 2013, the European Commission published a call inviting proposals that address violations of media freedom and pluralism, not only with a theoretical approach but also by providing practical support to journalists. In the framework of this Call, the following grant agreements have been signed:
- “Strengthening Journalism in Europe: Tools, Networking, Training” – Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom (European University Institute), in cooperation with Center for Media and Communication Studies (Central European University)
- “Strengthening Journalists’ Rights, Protections and Skills: Understanding Defamation Laws versus Press Freedom” – The International Press Institute
- “Taking action and mapping violations of media freedom and plurality across the European Union” – Index on Censorship (The Writers and Scholars Educational Trust);
- “Safety Net for European Journalists. A Transnational Support Network for Media Freedom in Italy and Southeast Europe” – Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso (Fondazione Opera Campana dei Caduti) , in cooperation with the South East Europe Media Organisation (International Press Institute), Ossigeno per l’Informazione and Evgenia Siaper

We will be reporting on the activities of these institutions as they begin their much needed work in Europe and are hoping that all countries in the EU will be equally monitored as the effects of the economic crisis/austerity cuts on society and therefore the media are not always obvious but they have been far reaching.
